Bilbo Baggins pony encounters the creature, Gollum.

Between this picture and the previous Gollum picture you can piece together Sméagol's decline and why Bilbo didn't recognise him as a member of his own species. The books would have taken a totally difference direction if he had.

"Where did I get off to? Oh nowhere special, thought I'd take the scenic detour down in the cave. Met another Hobbit there, he tried to eat my face. What the burned second breakfasts is that all about?!"
